Xerosis (the scientific name for skin dryness) occurs when the water content of the stratum corneum is lower than normal. It can result in a thickening of the stratum corneum, i.e. cell turnover that is too rapid (-28 days), which does not allow the natural elimination process to keep pace. Aging, innate sensitivity, drug treatments, hormonal changes or external factors (cold, dry weather, excessive hygiene…) amplify or even trigger it. The results: the skin becomes rough, tight and scales form and accumulate on the surface, giving the appearance of cracked skin, also known as crocodile skin.
